Wilderness Trail – Craft Bourbon Tour #4

Next stop on my Craft Tour was Wilderness Trail. I’d never heard of this place but it was in the Bluegrass Region in my passport so it warranted a visit. I didn’t try to schedule a tour. I just showed up the way I like it.

Obviously new buildings, I entered the Visitor’s Center looking for a tour.

I was in luck and able to purchase a slot on the very next one.

Grain

I looked around the gift shop area and realized they were promoting the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, not the Craft Tour. Wait, which is it? I didn’t realize Wilderness Trail had grown to the point where they manufactured sufficient volume to classify as one of the big boys with Old Forester and Wild Turkey. Who knew? I grabbed one of the free Bourbon Trail passports and got both of them stamped to cover all my bases. Can’t be too thorough, you know.

Spirit Driven Machine

It really was worth the extra fiddling.

Plumb Bob

I love seeing the old school plumb bob inside the rick houses to measure how balanced the barrels are.

Barrel Head – number 50,000!

Wilderness Trail prides itself on the science of the yeast strains. They actually helped Limestone Branch revive their original strain.

After the tour we had the typical tasting, to include a sweet candy finish. The rye was particularly delicious.

I was pretty excited to kill two birds with one stone. My horizons were broadened and I had a great afternoon checking out something I’ve never heard of before.
