Heidelberg Project
The Heidelberg Project is a critically acclaimed art project that was started by Detroiter Tyree Guyton in 1986. He grew up on Heidelberg Street and, after serving in the US Army, he began his outdoor art project as a political protest to demonstrate the deterioration of the neighborhood. He has won critical acclaim and the project has been at odds a few times with the mayor of Detroit who came with bull dozers and police to demolish portions.
The project is essentially one block bounded by Mt. Elliott to the east and Ellery on the west. There’s even an iPhone app intended to enhance your enjoyment of the area.
That car brings back memories. I worked on that car when GM launched that at the great Buick City Assembly Plant in Flint. That plant was closed back in 1999. Another thing to add to my list to visit.
If you’re going, I recommend a bit of a warmer day and a quick visit to the App Store for the app. I hear there’s one for Android but I have no way of confirming that.
