Toronto’s Other Airport
Bella wrote about the incredible deals to be had flying to Europe out of Toronto. To be specific, she was talking about airport code YYZ, Toronto Pearson International Airport. There’s another airport right in the heart of the city. It’s called Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (YTZ). It’s not very big and only two airlines service it: Air Canada Express and Porter.
Air Canada Express only services Montréal-Trudeau, but according to Porter, they serve the following:
Boston
Mont Tremblant (Seasonal)
Stevensville (Seasonal)
Burlington, VT (Seasonal)
Myrtle Beach (Seasonal)
Sudbury
Charleston (Seasonal)
New York (Newark)
Thunder Bay
Chicago-Midway
Ottawa
Timmins
Halifax
Québec City
Washington-Dulles
Moncton
Sault Ste. Marie
Windsor
Montréal-Trudeau
St. John's
In some cases it is worth checking out. For instance, I just compared flights to Chicago-Midway and it was $200 cheaper on Porter from YTZ than on Delta from YYZ.
Nice to know, but that’s not why I started this post. I just thought the whole island airport was intriguing so I grabbed my camera and took a walk. The new tunnel was a topic of discussion one morning on the radio, so I figured it’s a pretty big deal. It’s painted on the wall…
Once inside, follow the signs to the elevators.
The car ferry runs every 15 minutes and there is a complimentary shuttle to the Union Train Station. Not much in Toronto is free, so that’s something to remember.
The view from the ferry is remarkable.
On the way back from the ferry I surmised there must be some controversy regarding expansion amongst the locals. I really don’t think they mean the ones from Winnipeg.
I didn’t see many people in the tunnel and my fellow passengers on the ferry appeared to be sightseers like me as evidenced by their lack of baggage. I didn’t even see any carry on bags. It doesn’t appear to be a very busy airport. I have to admit I’ve only heard of private corporate planes using the airport.
Oh well, it was a fun day in the sun.
