Eating on the Trans-Siberian Railroad

Eating on the Trans-Siberian Railroad can pose a challenge.  We were on the train for days and the choices in the dining car were a very limited.  Often the food we wanted was sold out or the language barrier and cultural differences in food choices often lead to disappointment.  Luckily, we packed food for the trip.

At the end of every sleeper car is a samovar that contains boiled water.  For each day, I packed one oatmeal packet for breakfast, one package of ramen for lunch, and a Mountain House packaged meal for dinner that I shared with my son.  Of the Mountain House brands meals the ones we liked the best were lasagne, beef stroganoff, and beef stew. All these meals can be made with–hot water!

I packed a thermos for each of us and plastic forks and spoons for each day. We actually looked forward to dinner and did supplement with chips that we were able to buy at stations along the way.

By the way, there was plenty of beer on the train.
