Holland, MI

Holland MI is on what I grew up thinking of as the West Coast. As a kid it was as foreign as California in my eyes. I know I had to visit a few times with my parents but I really don’t remember it much.

Holland is known for their Tulip Festival held in May. We went there for a weekend visit as the tulips were just starting to sprout, long before the prime viewing.

The windmill above is 250 years old and has the distinction of being the last windmill to leave the Netherlands. It is named the De Zwaan Windmill and was sold to the city for $2800. It’s been sitting on Windmill Island in Muskegon harbor since 1965.

Due to seasonal restrictions we wouldn’t get too close to the island so we spent our time visiting the shops on W 8th St.

We dined at the New Holland Brewery. I really enjoyed their Dragon’s Milk Bourbon Barrel Stout.

One of the coolest things is this building which housed the First State Bank at one time. Bank robbers left their mark in 1932.

Holland, Michigan’s sister city is QurerĂ©taro, Mexico. What are the chances of one of our favorite Mexican destinations is sistered with a town in our state?

I want to see the tulips in bloom one day.
