Many people have never heard of the Azore Islands. This archipelago is situated in the Atlantic Ocean about 1000 miles west of the coast of Europe. The islands are a Portuguese autonomous region.

In North America, there are large Portuguese settlements in Toronto and Boston, so flying to the Azores from either of these cities, would probably be the least expensive way to get there.

I like to book trips as early as I can because I believe that is the best way to ensure getting a low fare. In June, I booked a trip for an April departure out of Toronto. The cost per ticket was about $425 roundtrip on SATA Airlines. In order to explore the island, renting a car is essential. Due to the time of the year we went, the inter-island ferries were not running. Therefore, our stay was confined to one island. Which really allowed us to take our time.

What I liked about the Azores: the food was delicious, the prices were low, and the natural beauty was breathtaking.

My favorite dish was “cozido” which is a juicy stew of four meats, potatoes, and other vegetables that is cooked underground near thermal waters for six hours. I will probably crave it the rest of my life.

Local wine was very palatable and only $3 a glass. Beer was just $3 a bottle.

One thing not to be missed is the local cheesecakes. (Pictured below). Unlike anything I’ve ever had. They went down wonderfully with a cappuccino.
