Bratislava, Slovakia-Great Getaway from Vienna

Bratislava’s proximity to Vienna makes it a perfect getaway trip from the Austrian capital and a chance to add another country to one’s country count. The OBB train makes it even easier with its “BratisLover” deal.  For just 16 Euro roundtrip (children travel for 8 Euro), one can be in Bratislava in an hour and six minutes. The return ticket is valid for four days so it is possible to spend a good amount of time in Bratislava and truly enjoy this under-rated, European, capital city. In addition, the ticket includes all public transportation within Bratislava and offers various discounts on select tours.

Tickets can be purchased at any OBB kiosk in the Vien Hauptbanhoff station. There are 16 trains daily that leave every hour starting at 5:21 a.m. until 10:21 p.m.  Returning to Vienna, trains depart every hour from 5:43 a.m. to 10:43 p.m.

I found the food in Bratislava to be some of the best I’ve had in Europe and the prices are much lower than in more popular European cities.  We stayed at the five-star Arcadia Hotel for under $100 a night; a hotel I highly recommend. Taxi fare to the hotel from the train station was 17 Euro.  As I mentioned earlier, we could have taken public transportation for free, but since it was nearly 100 degrees, we opted for the comfort and ease of a taxi.

Bratislava is a great strolling city. There are numerous pedestrian walkways lined with restaurants and historic sites abound. Here are some photos of Bratislava.
