Packing for Airport Security

Nothing is more maddening than to have the perfectly packed suitcase imploded getting through airport security. I have learned the hard way.  Every country seems to have a different set of rules.  For example, in most European airports your liquids must fit in the issued baggie they provide and the bag MUST close completely.  German airports require that EVERY electronic device be removed from the suitcase.  In Mexico, my umbrella had to be scanned separately. Showing up to the airport unprepared will cost you dear time.

I learned to pack for airport security.  Here’s what I do when traveling outside the USA.

    1. Pack all clothes first.  Set aside all metals, electronics, cosmetics.
    2. Separate personal items into three bags: dry, liquid, and medication.  Medication is exempt from the issued bag.
    3. Be sure as many liquid items as possible are travel size:  deodorant, toothpaste, etc..
    4. Set aside ANYTHING that may alert the screener.  This will save you time in the long run.
    5. Put all small electronics in another bag.
    6. Next if you have a DSLR camera, separate the lens from the body.  Work these items into the top layer of your clothing so they are protected.
    7. Fill in with bags of: electronics, dry personal items, liquids, medication.

When you go through security, after your passport and boarding pass have been verified, set your suitcase on the counter, secure your boarding pass and passport in your suitcase, open the suitcase, remove the four bags any cameras and lens and put them in one bin.  If required, take a second bin for your suitcase.  Send your locked suitcase through security first then send your personal items and electronics.  Never put open valuables through first.  If you get held up, someone could walk away with your cell phone or other valuable.

I don’t wear jewelry when I travel so I won’t set off the metal detector.  Make sure pockets are empty, belt is removed and that you wear shoes that are easy to take off and put on.

On your return trip, I recommend amassing all souvenirs into one suitcase among your party.  In that suitcase ensure nothing of great value is in it. Some airports may make you check the bag if they think the souvenirs can be used as weapons.
