Across America by Train

One of the most memorable trips I’ve ever taken with my son was from Ann Arbor, Michigan to Emeryville, California aboard Amtrak’s California Zephyr.

I purchased the tickets in November for an April departure and paid $666 for both of us.  Of the $666 paid, $384 of it was for a roomette which slept two.  Since we were going to be on the train for three days and two nights, I thought a private room was essential. Additionally, the cost of the roomette included all meals.  I have to say, the food on Amtrak wasn’t bad.  Another benefit of paying the extra $384 was having access to the showers that are only available in the sleeper cars.

We flew back to Detroit on Spirit Airlines for $375 for both. Total cost of the trip was $1041 for two.

For three days, we saw some of the most beautiful scenery I’ve ever seen.  Time seemed to pass too quickly.  When the journey was over, I didn’t want it to end.  Here’s what I’m talking about…
