La Ruta Puuc

When the term “Mayan Ruins” comes up, most people immediately think, “Chichen Itza.” Chichen Itza in its own right is a world class site.  It’s proximity to Cancun certainly makes it a doable day trip.  However, there are many Mayan ruins in the Yucatan.  One of the best ways to explore several of the lesser known sites is to take the bus tour from Merida along La Ruta Puuc.  In my opinion, this trip is not to be missed if one is fascinated with Mayan ruins.

The bus tour leaves only on Sundays at 8:00 a.m. from the TAME bus station in Merida. The bus moves along from site to site giving visitors 20 to 30 minutes at each site before getting back on the bus to head to the next one.  The day trip takes one to five Mayan ruin sites.  The final stop is Uxmal.  Uxmal is a very large site and visitors are given a few hours to explore it before heading back to Merida.

Be sure to take a bottle of water, sunscreen and a hat.  You will be spending a lot of time exposed to the sun and heat.  Sunburn and heat stroke have a way a sneaking up so protect yourself.

Below are pictures from the stops.
