National Parks: Point Pelee, Ontario

A good road trip for a day or a weekend from Detroit is Point Pelee National Park.  Point Pelee is located just over an hour from the city of Detroit just outside the city of Leamington.  Please remember to pack your passport for this great getaway.

The park is filled with bird watching opportunities, hiking trails, picnic areas, beaches, and a camp ground.  The park’s greatest attraction though is the chance to walk to the southernmost tip of Canada.

In the fall, the highlight of the park is the monarch butterfly migration.  Each year thousands of monarchs depart Pelee for Mexico.  The sight is supposed to be amazing. To get up-to-date migration reports, contact Parks Canada at 519-322-2365 or via email at peele.info@pc.gc.ca.

Admission to the park is $8 Canadian per adult.  Access to the southern tip is available with a shuttle that leaves from the south visitors’ center.  On week days, the last shuttle leaves at 5:00 p.m.  If you arrive after the shuttle stops running, it is still possible to walk to the point.  The roundtrip is five kilometers.  Plan on at least 40 minutes each way.
