Boone County – Craft Bourbon Tour #8

When I left New Riff I set a course for Boone County Distillery. I knew it was closing soon but it was on my way back to Louisville. I’d seen the signs on the highway a number of times so I knew the general location. It is basically in an industrial part and would be the first of many distilleries that are installed in a modern warehouse and operating on a very small scale.

Entrance

The entranceway was packed with a large group having a formal tasting. I loved the stone motif.

Welcome center and tasting area

Made By Ghosts is an homage to the influence of the pioneers who settled the area and distilled their grains into bourbon. The young lady behind the counter basically gave me a tour just by asking a few questions. Boone County wanted to be able to use the old distillery registration number of 8 but that registrant had been given to Four Roses after the Petersburg Distillery, which had been a large producer in Boone County from 1883 until it closed shop in 1916. The reopening 100 years later forced them to a new number (DSP-KY-20028) which had an 8 in it but they also found a way to incorporate it into the logo. Notice how the second o in “Boone” lines up over the o in “County”? Those distillery numbers hold a lot of meaning to the operators of distilleries.

Accolades

It’s more obvious in the press release photo from when the were “reclaimed in 2015”.

Offerings – Notice the 8 on the stave?

The gracious young lady took me back into the production room for a quick look around.

Speyside?

I didn’t notice the Speyside Bourbon Cooperage sign when I was there. I would have asked. That is generally known as a region in Scotland that produces a particular style of scotch.

Bone County is in the Northern Region and was my 8th stamp overall.
