Kazungula, Botswana Border Crossing to Zambia

I booked our transfer online with Chris Tours and paid $60 a person. I really recommend booking a transfer for this would be very difficult to do on one’s own.

The driver arrived at our hotel at 9:00 a.m. (right on time) and drove us to immigration to stamp out of Botswana. We drove on to wait for the ferry which took about 20 more minutes. Once the ferry arrived, we were on the Zambian side of the Zambezi River in mere minutes.

First stop is with the health officer for temperature check (if you’re running a fever or think you may be take some Tylenol an hour before you arrive) then to immigration. I had purchased a double entry visa on the Tazara train and when I went to get it out, I was told it wasn’t needed. Darn! I could have saved $60 on the two I purchased.

When we were released from immigration, we were on our way for the 60 km drive to Livingstone.

The entire immigration process took less than an hour from pick up at hotel to arrival at the Zambian side.

A bridge is currently being built between the two countries which is due to be completed in March 2020. I’m sure this will speed up the process. Currently a lot of time is spent navigating around the large number of semi trucks that have crowded the border. I was told that often times drivers wait two weeks to get across the river since the small ferries can only take one truck at a time.
